Kate's First Communion

My niece made her first communion last week end.  This is always a very special event for a second grader.   While I don't really remember my first communion ceremony, I do remember my mom taking me to a local department store for a photograph (I've posted it below... oh my, check out those teeth!).  I also remember receiving a little white prayer book that I still have today.

I planned to have a little photo session with my niece the day before her actual first communion.  The day was absolutely miserable... a mix of snow and rain, gloomy and cold.  That meant we had to take most of the photos inside the church.  I am NOT a fan of flash photography, but we made the best of it.

My niece was ADORABLE!  She really got into it and even suggested a few of the poses.  My sister, her Godmother, found her own first communion dress and gave it to my niece.  It fit perfectly and we took photos of her wearing both dresses... what 2nd grader doesn't want to dress up in fancy dresses and have her picture taken?  She was loving it (OK, it was pretty cold out and she wasn't happy having pictures taken on the porch, but I just had to do a FEW with some good natural light!).

You will notice that a few pictures below are just "details"... her sweet little shoes, an  earring (one of the pair given to my sister in law by my brother the night before their wedding) and her sparkly tiara.  I love capturing special little details that will be reminders of her special day.

While I think she is beautiful in every picture, I especially love the black and white photos.  Some of the BW photos were taken (thanks to my husband who tag teamed with me so I could capture stills and video) on the day of her first communion (which was a beautiful day... thank goodness).  They may not be as crisp as I like, but I love how they capture a few moments of that day.

I just discovered FlipSnack thanks to my little sister!  This site allows you to upload a pdf and then converts it into this amazing little photo album.  I uploaded some of my Easter photos just to test it out.  I love how you can hear the pages turning and the quality of the photos is amazing.   What fun way to share photos... I think I'll be making some more of these!

Rombach Easter 2012

I can remember many Easter's from my childhood.  We all had a colorful basket filled with "Easter grass" (mine was always pink) and we set them outside our bedroom doors for the Easter Bunny to fill.  When we woke up in the morning, we were treated to a full basket of candy, colored eggs and usually some Silly Putty.   Does anyone else remember Silly Putty?  It was the perfect Easter treat because it came in an egg.  The Sunday paper included a section of comics, which were printed in color.  We could flatten out our Silly Putty over one of the pictures, pull it away and then distort the image transferred to the putty by stretching it.   I know, not very high tech, but we had lots of fun!!

This year's Easter included the annual egg hunt in my parent's backyard.  I arrived early to get some shots of the little details... like all the eggs hidden in the yard by the Easter Bunny (smile).  Once the nieces and nephews arrived, it was time to find them (well, after I herded everyone into a group for some photos!).  The weather was PERFECT this year.  Most of the time the kids are looking for eggs in the soggy grass or a bit of snow.  This year, it was sunny and mild.  After all the eggs were found, we headed inside for a great meal.  As you can see below, my parents create a beautiful Easter table.

After dinner my nieces and I went outside for an impromptu photo shoot.  They were adorable and we had a great time!  I gave one of my nieces a little bunny pin that I wore for Easter when I was her age.   I love the picture of her wearing it.

On another note, my photography session calendar is filling up!  There will be a variety of senior sessions, some family sessions and one session with a group of 19 celebrating a 50th wedding anniversary coming up this summer and fall.  I'm a little nervous about shooting a group of 19... but I guess there has to be a first for everything!  Most importantly, I'm hoping for good weather because I know how challenging it is to gather a group of 19!!

Kate is Eight!

My niece turned eight this past week and she celebrated with lots of family and friends.  Kate has her OWN sense of style and it shows.  She is confident and isn't afraid to express herself.  This was completely evident when she plugged in her new speaker/microphone system and belted out some tunes!  I love watching her open gifts... she has the best reactions.  Whether it's a card with her picture on the front, a new pair of jeans or a big, old speaker for her iPod, she is completely THRILLED and you can SEE it on her face.  ...and of course, there are party games for all the kids.  One game required all the kids to wrap each other with a roll of toilet paper.  Another game had them squirting whipped cream into a partner's cup (being held in the partner's teeth).  Needless to say, there were a lot of sticky faces at the end of that one!

I'll keep this short as it's late and I should be sleeping... sometimes there just aren't enough minutes in the day! (smile)

Mollie's Snow Day

What do you do when you wake up Monday morning and you find out your school is cancelled for a snow day?  If you are ME and you are just itching to get out and do a winter photo shoot, you call your good friend and ask if her teenage daughter would be willing to get out of bed and be photographed out in the snow and cold!   That's just what happened this past Monday.  Hard to believe that we had a snow day this past week with the sun shining now and not a pinch of snow is left on the ground.

My friend's daughter, Mollie, is the PERFECT model!  She jumped out of bed, got herself ready in a flash and even packed of bag of clothing changes.  It was still snowing like crazy when we arrived at the park.  Mollie was such a professional!  She was freezing the whole time, but you wouldn't know it.  Just look at the pictures below and you can see Mollie's incredible beauty and personality.  The thing about Mollie is this... she is the kind of teenager I hope my nieces and nephews grow up to be.  She is a gifted musician, an excellent student, a loyal friend... she is kind to others and when ever someone comes to my house and sees one of her pictures on the kitchen board, I hear things like "Oh, I just love Mollie" or "Oh, I know her, she is such a sweet person".   I can't agree more.   ...and how did this young woman turn out so amazing?  That would be due to the incredible person who raised her... my friend and colleague!!

We spent about 2 1/2 hours "playing" in the snow before quitting.  By then, I think Mollie was completely frozen (but still smiling and having a great time).  I always love taking Mollie's picture and we already planned a spring shoot - won't she look lovely with a background of tulips or daffodils?

I'm guessing this was the last snow of the WORST winter (as far as I'm concerned!) in years.  The lack of snow was depressing... I'm hoping for a MUCH snowier winter in 2013!!

Until then, I'll just have to embrace the fact that Spring is around the corner!
